A vigilante operative was rescued on Sunday night when some yet-to-be-identified gunmen attacked men of the Anambra State Vigilante Service along the Amesi-Uga Road in Aguata Local Government Area of the state.
The incident, which occured on Sunday, left one of the vigilante group members injured and their operational vehicle set ablaze.
The Anambra State Police Spokesman, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, who confirmed the incident in a press statement on Monday, said the police responded swiftly to the attack and rescued one of the vigilante group members.
Ikenga said the injured victim was immediately rushed to the hospital where he is currently receiving treatment.
According to him, the police operatives cordoned off the scene of the incident to prevent the gunmen from taking undue advantage of the situation to loot properties and goods of individuals.
Ikenga said, “The police-led security forces on Sunday, by 2.30 pm responded swiftly to an attack on members of the Anambra State Vigilantes of Umuchu extraction along the Amesi-Uga Road and rescued one wounded vigilante operative.
“The joint security forces quickly rushed the victim to the hospital where he is currently responding to treatment and activated intelligent-information-led patrols in the area aimed to deny the criminals the space they enjoy to cause havoc and possibly arrest.
“Unfortunately, during the gun duel bullets hit the fuel tank of the Toyota Frontier Van belonging to the AVG. As a result, the van was razed down.”
